Michael Rankins, principal of SwanShadow Communications, has been writing since he was old enough to hold a pencil. He has written professionally for most of his career, having crafted copy for corporations and ad agencies including Citicorp, World Savings, Summit State Bank, JB Communications, GM&B Advertising, Clarity USA, Lowepro, and Rustad Marketing.

During his ten-plus years in member and corporate communications with Health Plan of the Redwoods, Michael developed and was managing editor of an extensive intranet that revolutionized HPR’s interdepartmental information exchange. He also led the health plan’s Internet projects and internal communications efforts.

An accomplished public speaker, Michael has captivated audiences throughout northern California and Oregon. With over 2,500 lectures, classes and seminars to his credit, Michael’s engaging personal style connects with listeners of all ages and backgrounds.

For more than seven years, Michael published a bimonthly newsletter that reached subscribers across the western United States. He continues to write a weekly inspirational column. Michael is a proud member of the Bay Area Editors’ Forum.

Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Television from San Francisco State University. He also studied journalism and broadcast communications at Pepperdine University.

Demonstrating the breadth of his knowledge and interests, Michael was an undefeated champion and Tournament of Champions semi-finalist on the television quiz program “Jeopardy!” in 1988. More recently, you may have seen Michael advance to the second round of the Jeopardy! Ultimate Tournament of Champions in the spring of 2005. An avid student of popular culture, Michael is a contributing editor for DVD Verdict, a film review site visited by more than 20,000 readers each day.
